Working group Winkler
Global Neurology and One Health
The Global Neurology and One Health working group addresses neurological diseases that occur in resource-poor regions, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. These regions have the highest prevalence of cerebral infections such as cerebral malaria, meningitis, and parasitic diseases, as well as the highest prevalence of epilepsy. Furthermore, neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases are on the rise.
The working group's research projects focus on investigating the prevalence and other epidemiological aspects of neurological diseases, as well as monitoring their progression and response to selected therapeutic measures. Research findings are communicated to political stakeholders with the ultimate goal of strengthening health systems, particularly with regard to neurological diseases. This includes, among other things, capacity building and further training for colleagues in the affected regions.
